Gen 3 Voltorb [QC 1/2]

[OVERVIEW]
Voltorb sits at the coveted 20 Speed tier. Tying only with Elekid and Diglett, as well as holding the record for the fastest Explosion and Thunder-Wave in the metagame. This allows Voltorb to reliably revenge kill, and trade with a large portion of the tier. In addition to its Speed, Voltorb’s strong offensive typing allow it to check powerful threats such as Abra, Doduo, Wailmer, and Gastly. However, Voltorb is held back by the prominence of Diglett and Trapinch, and is often forced into clicking Explosion against them, preventing it from checking the aforementioned Pokemon long term. Voltorb’s damage output can sometimes let it down, with it struggling to break through bulkier Pokemon such as Chinchou, Pineco, and Porygon, with Explosion missing the KO against the latter two from full.

[SET]
Offensive Pivot (Voltorb) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Static
Level: 5
EVs: 36 HP / 40 Atk / 116 Def / 80 SpA / 196 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Thunder-Wave/Thief/Substitute
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Explosion

[SET COMMENTS]
The defense investment allows Voltorb to always survive Earthquake from mixed bulky attacker Wailmer. 40 Attack EVs with a Timid nature is used to guarantee Explosion OHKOes Trapinch and Wailmer. Thunder-Wave is Voltorb’s best form of speed control, effectively neutering slower Pokemon such as Abra, Anorith, and Gastly. Thief gives Voltorb a recovery option while also letting it cripple opposing Pokemon. Substitute is used to punish status attempts from slower Pokemon such as Porygon and Chinchou, giving Voltorb a free turn to attack or cripple the opposing pokemon. Hidden Power Grass OHKOes Rock/Ground-types such as Larvitar and Onix, and lets Voltorb fight Electric immunes without committing to Explosion. It is also worth mentioning Hidden Power Grass into Thunderbolt KOes mixed bulky attacker Wailmer. Finally, Explosion OHKOes most of the tier, preventing troublesome pokemon like Abra and Bagon from snowballing out of control, and allowing it to beat otherwise strong checks in Chinchou and opposing Voltorb. Caution should be taken however, in order not to use Explosion into a Ghost-type.

Voltorb pairs well with Pokemon that have trouble with Diglett and Trapinch, such as Houndour, Abra, and Elekid. Forcing them out early, as well as having the potential to trade with them albeit unreliably. Elekid in particular forms a potent offensive core with Voltorb, overloading their shared checks and smothering offense with their speed and support options, with Light Screen, Thunder-Wave, and Rain Dance to name a few. Wailmer is a good teammate as it can struggle into Doduo,Staryu, and Gastly, and loves to come in against offensive Ground-types. Voltorb has strong synergy with Cacnea as it can spike against Diglett, Cubone, Trapinch, and Chinchou lacking Ice Beam. Voltorb in turn switches into Doduo locked into Drill Peck. Lastly Porygon and Trapinch can reliably remove Diglett in the event that Voltorb loses the speed tie, while freeing health for both to check Abra or Elekid later in the match.

[Other Options]
Mirror Coat can be used to land surprise KOs against special attackers but is difficult to make use of in practice as the list of special attackers that would like to stay in against Voltorb is small. Taunt can deny utility like Cacnea and Pineco’s spikes and weather from Exeggcute. Rain Dance and Light Screen are viable options to support setup sweepers such as Horsea, Larvitar, and Bagon.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Offensive Ground-types**: Unless chipped, Voltorb is forced to use Explosion against Diglett,Trapinch, and Cubone. Having to win a Speed tie against Diglett, and the latter two commonly carrying Protect. This means Voltorb will have to gamble if it wants to get anything out of the interaction.

** Electric Resists**: Voltorb’s attacks do very little to pokemon that resist Electric-type attacks. Cacnea and Bagon can set up against Voltorb and do not mind absorbing Explosion from more important teammates. Magnemite and Lileep care even less about Voltorb as they resist Explosion on top of Thunderbolt.

**Paralysis**: Paralysis ruins Voltorb. Most of Voltorb’s utility comes from the fact that it is one of only three Pokemon that reach 20 Speed. Voltorb only has average bulk at best so it has to take caution against opposing Voltorb and Porygon.

[OVERVIEW]
Voltorb sits at an excellent sSpeed tier. Mention the exact number it can hit Tying only with Elekid and Diglett, as well as holding the record for the fastest Explosion in the metagame. Explain why this is so good, i.e. revenge killing and forcing progress In addition to its sSpeed, Voltorb’s respectable bulk and while Voltorb's bulk is decent by LC standards, it is neither a selling point or a detriment, and Voltorb mostly checks these foes through a combination of its Speed and STAB mostly strong offensive typing allow it to check powerful threats such as Abra, Doduo, Wailmer, and Gastly. However, Voltorb is held back by the prominence of Diglett and Trapinch, and is often forced into clicking Explosion against them, preventing it from checking the aforementioned Pokemon long term. Voltorb's is also quite weak damage output can sometimes let it down, tickling with it struggling to break through It still does decent damage to these foes, 2HKOing Chinchou with HP Grass and hitting all of them hard with Explosion bulkier Pokemon such as Chinchou, Pineco, and Porygon, with Explosion missing the KO against the latter two from full HP.

The defense investment allows Voltorb to always survive Earthquake from Mmixed bulky attacker Wailmer majority of the time. 40 Attack EVs with a Timid nature is used to guarantee Explosion OHKOes Trapinch and Wailmer. Thunder-Wave is Voltorb’s best form of speed control, effectively neutering slower pPokemon such as Abra, Anorith, and Gastly. Thief gives Voltorb a recovery option while also letting it cripple opposing Pokemon. Explain how Substitute is used to dodge status attempts from slower Pokemon such as Porygon and Chinchou. Hidden Power Grass is used to avoid becoming setup fodder to Larvitar, and is Voltorb’s strongest option against Chinchou, Diglett, and Onix. Mention that it lets it outright OHKOes the Rock/Grounds. It isn't its strongest attack against foes neutral to Normal, Explosion is, but mention that it lets Volorb fight them without KOing itself. Also mention how HP Grass puts mixed bulky attacker Wailmer into Thunderbolt KO range without triggering Sitrus Berry Finally, Explosion prevents troublesome pPokemon like Abra and Bagon from snowballing out of control, while also allowing it to potentially trade with Diglett and Trapinch. Mention that Explosion OHKOes most of the metagame, allowing Voltorb to trade with much of the tier, including otherwise strong checks like Chinchou. Also mention that it should be wary of a Ghost-type switching into Boom

Voltorb pairs well with Pokemon that appreciate Diglett and Trapinch gone, such as Houndour, Abra, and Elekid. This sentence does not fit with the rest of the analysis. You talk about how Voltorb struggles against these foes, given Diglett's Speed tie, and Trapinch often carrying Protect. In this paragraph, first talk about the Pokemon that appreciate Voltorb checks offensively. At the very end talk about the potential for Voltorb to remove or trade with these foes, but how it's very unreliable at this job. Elekid in particular forms a potent offensive core with Voltorb, overloading their shared checks and smothering offense with their sSpeed and support options. Specify which options Wailmer is a good teammate as it can struggle into Doduo, Staryu, and Gastly, foes Voltorb can deal with. Mention how Wailmer take on Ground-types Voltorb has strong synergy with Cacnea as it can spike against Diglett, Cubone, Trapinch, and Chinchou lacking Ice Beam. Voltorb in turn switches into Doduo locked into Drill Peck. Trapinch can reliably remove Diglett in the event that Voltorb loses the sSpeed tie, while freeing health for Trapinch to trap Abra or Elekid later in the match. Mention that Porygon can trap both foes too. Explain how it frees health

Mirror cCoat can be used to land surprise KOs against special attackers but is difficult to make use of in practice as the list of special attackers that would like to stay in against Voltorb is small. Taunt can deny utility like Cacnea and Pineco's opportunities to spike, Spikes and deny weather from Exeggcute, etc. Rain Dance and Light Screen are viable options to support setup sweepers such as Horsea, Larvitar, and Bagon.

**Offensive Grounds-types**: Unless they are chipped, Voltorb is forced to use Explosion against Diglett, Trapinch, and Cubone. Having to win a sSpeed tie against Diglett and the latter two commonly carrying Protect. Explain what this last part means

**Electric Resists and Specially Bulky Pokemon**: Voltorb’s attacks bounce off of electric resists such as Chinchou, Voltorb, Magnemite, and Bagon. Specially Bulky Pokemon such as Porygon, Lileep, and Pineco also care little for any of Voltorb’s attacks. Separate this section into two parts. Note that "resists" cannot be used as a noun. Also specify ways Voltorb can break through these foes, either through Hidden Power Grass or Explosion

Mention how paralysis ruins Voltorb

Voltorb sits at the coveted 20 Speed tier. Tying only with Elekid and Diglett, as well as holding the record for the fastest Explosion and Thunder- Wave (replace - with space) in the metagame. (i think you could merge these first two sentences but the information is good) This allows Voltorb to reliably revenge kill, and trade with a large portion of the tier. (i would mention that explosion isnt even guaranteed to take diglett out since it can win the speed tie and KO with eq. could introduce trapinch as a bad matchup first then explain how diglett is even worse) Voltorb’s damage output can sometimes let it down, with it struggling to break through bulkier Pokemon such as Chinchou, Pineco, and Porygon, with Explosion missing the KO against the latter two from full HP.

Thunder- Wave (replace - with space) is Voltorb’s best form of speed control, effectively neutering (can you point out these Pokemon are frail and rely on their Speed?) slower Pokemon such as Abra, Anorith, and Gastly. Thief gives Voltorb a recovery option while also letting it cripple opposing Pokemon. (mention that you can steal sitrus to remove recovery or pinch berries to deny a sweep) Substitute is used to punish status attempts from slower Pokemon such as Porygon and Chinchou, giving Voltorb a free turn to attack or cripple the opposing pPokemon with Thunder Wave. Hidden Power Grass OHKOes Rock/Ground-types such as Larvitar and Onix, and lets Voltorb fight Electric immunes without committing to Explosion. Voltorb is an appealing target for Diglett and Trapinch, allowing it to force Forcing them out early, as well as having the potential to trade with them albeit unreliably. Elekid in particular forms a potent offensive core with Voltorb, overloading their shared checks and smothering offense with their speed and support options, with Light Screen, Thunder- Wave (replace - with space), and Rain Dance to name a few. (i think thunder wave is the most relevant. i dont see how rain dance is relevant to the elekid+voltorb combo) Wailmer is a good teammate as it can struggle into Doduo, (add space after comma) Staryu, and Gastly, and loves to come in against offensive Ground-types. (could you rephrase to highlight how wailmer gets free entry after voltorb is picked off by an opposing ground type) Voltorb has strong synergy with Cacnea as it can spike against Diglett, Cubone, Trapinch, and Chinchou lacking Ice Beam. Voltorb in turn switches into Doduo locked into Drill Peck. **Offensive Ground-types**: Unless chipped they have already taken chip damage, Voltorb is forced to use Explosion against Diglett, Trapinch, (add spaces after commas) and Cubone. Having to win a Speed tie against Diglett, and the latter two commonly carrying Protect. Voltorb has to win a speed tie versus Diglett, and Trapinch and Cubone commonly run Protect, meaning This means Voltorb will have to gamble if it wants to get anything out of these interactions.

**Electric Resists**: Voltorb’s attacks do very little to pokemon that resist Electric-type attacks. (liked the previous phrasing of "bounce off" better but up to you, could mention that its coverage option Hidden Power Grass is quite weak as well) Cacnea and Bagon can set up against Voltorb (don't know if i agree with Bagon, what about thunder wave? can rephrase to explain that Cacnea can set up Spikes against Voltorb) and do not mind absorbing Explosion from more important teammates. (don't think anything likes getting exploded on) Magnemite and Lileep care even less about Voltorb as they resist Explosion on top of Thunderbolt.

(would rephrase to something that highlights how once voltorb is paralyzed it becomes dead weight/setup fodder. you can also mention how Subsitute can be used to block paralysis from opposing mons with twave)
