RU Sharpedo [QC: 2/2][GP: 2/2]

Sharpedo-Pic.png

[OVERVIEW]

Sharpedo is a devastating late-game cleaner in RU due to its fantastic mixed offensive stats and great ability in Speed Boost, which makes it nearly impossible to revenge kill after a few turns. Sharpedo can run either a specially-based mixed or physical set, which makes counterplay much more difficult. However, Sharpedo has awful defensive stats and bad defensive typing, meaning it depends heavily on team support and KOing foes in one hit to avoid being defeated in return. Even though many checks are dependent on its set, both sets still struggle against bulky Water-types, various offensive threats, and strong priority users.

[SET]
name: Specially-based Mixed Cleaner
move 1: Hydro Pump
move 2: Dark Pulse
move 3: Close Combat
move 4: Protect
item: Life Orb
ability: Speed Boost
nature: Mild
evs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Sharpedo's special STAB moves are best to deal with common threats and would-be checks such as Golisopod, Gastrodon, and Steelix. Close Combat hits specially defensive walls such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Registeel. Protect ensures that Speed Boost triggers and blocks First Impression from Golisopod and Flygon.

Sharpedo fits best on more offensive and entry hazard-stacking teams, since they enable it to clean late-game and function as a strong wincon. Special setup sweepers such as Polteageist and Necrozma appreciate Sharpedo's ability to weaken specially defensive walls such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Snorlax with Close Combat. Sharpedo helps physical setup sweepers such as Barbaracle, Cloyster, and Necrozma because it can lure in physical walls and weaken bulky foes such as Milotic, Quagsire, and Vileplume. These setup sweepers also have good offensive synergy with Sharpedo and can help it by weakening opposing Pokemon for its own late-game sweep. Knock Off users such as Golisopod, Heracross, and Toxicroak remove Heavy-Duty Boots from Milotic, Gastrodon, and Flying-types such as Togekiss, Noivern, and Crobat, making it possible to weaken them with Stealth Rock so that Sharpedo can pick them off. Cobalion, Polteageist, and Mimikyu take advantage of common priority users that revenge kill Sharpedo like Entei and Lucario.

[SET]
name: Physical Cleaner
move 1: Waterfall
move 2: Crunch
move 3: Close Combat
move 4: Protect
item: Life Orb
ability: Speed Boost
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Physical Sharpedo takes advantage of its higher Attack stat and more reliable STAB moves for an easier late-game sweep and better matchup against specially defensive Pokemon such as Umbreon, Snorlax, and Assault Vest Reuniclus. Waterfall is used over Liquidation because the flinch chance has more use than the slightly higher Base Power and possible Defense drop. Close Combat hits bulky foes such as Registeel, Umbreon, and Cobalion extremely hard. Protect allows Sharpedo to trigger Speed boost and prevents it from being revenge killed by First Impression from Golisopod and Flygon.

Sharpedo fits very well on offensive and entry hazard-stacking teams, since they can weaken its checks and appreciate its late-game cleaning. Necrozma, Golisopod, and Salazzle provide Knock Off to remove Heavy-Duty Boots from checks such as Gastrodon and Togekiss. Choice Scarf Gardevoir cripples bulky obstacles like Milotic, Gastrodon, and Vaporeon with Trick while also providing Healing Wish. Setup sweepers like Dragon Dance Flygon and Shell Smash Cloyster can also weaken these bulky Water-types and physical walls or take advantage of Sharpedo weakening them. Mimikyu, Polteageist, and Lucario are other good setup sweepers.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Flip Turn alongside Choice Band or Heavy-Duty Boots instead of Life Orb turns Sharpedo into an offensive pivot. However, Sharpedo is a poor pivot due to its bad defensive stats and missing Life Orb and a coverage move or Protect limits Sharpedo severely; Flip Turn also does very little damage to most of its checks, so it is better to use Sharpedo's teammates to weaken them. Destiny Bond is an option to remove an opposing Pokemon, but Sharpedo often has no space to run this move and it is also not a reliable strategy. Psychic Fangs over Close Combat is an option on the physical set to better deal with Toxicroak, Vileplume, and Galarian Weezing; however, without Close Combat, Sharpedo has a harder time breaking through bulky Pokemon such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Registeel. Ice Beam better deals with Togekiss and Noivern, but it has less use outside of these matchups and makes Sharpedo helpless against special walls such as Porygon2, Umbreon, and Registeel.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bulky Water-types**: Bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Gastrodon, and Suicune check both Sharpedo variants well and wear it down with their STAB moves quickly due to its bad defensive stats. However, Sharpedo has a chance to break through these Pokemon with a lucky Defense drop from Crunch or flinch from Dark Pulse. Suicune only has Rest for recovery and Volcanion doesn't run recovery, which makes them less reliable.

**Priority Users**: Strong priority users such as Lucario and Entei easily revenge kill Sharpedo due to its bad defensive stats. Special Toxicroak can also revenge kill Sharpedo with Vaccum Wave; however, this move is not very common at all. Golisopod and Flygon fail in this role, since Sharpedo can always block their First Impressions with Protect.

**Various Offensive Threats**: Toxicroak is a good offensive check to Sharpedo, since it is immune to Sharpedo's Water-type moves, not 2HKOed by its other two moves, and able to OHKO Sharpedo in return. As long as Mimikyu's Disguise is intact, it can always prevent a sweep from Sharpedo. Fast Choice Scarf users such as Flygon and Darmanitan can still revenge kill a +1 Sharpedo. However, unless Sharpedo just used Protect, it can easily use Protect to be faster than them next turn. Even though Golisopod fails to revenge kill Sharpedo with First Impression due to Protect, it can slightly check physical variants, since Sharpedo's Crunch does not put it into Emergency Exit range.

**Specially Defensive Pokemon**: Specially defensive Pokemon such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Snorlax take Sharpedo's special moves very well but are 2HKOed by Close Combat.

**Physically Defensive Pokemon**: Physical walls such as Galarian Weezing and Vileplume check physical sets very well and KO them very easily. However, Galarian Weezing is easy to wear down due to its lack of reliable recovery. In addition, they lose very quickly against special variants.

Hey, this is an AM check so you don't have to implement if you do not please to.
Really good work here, most were nitpicks here!

  • Close Combat hits specially defensive walls such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Registeel which would otherwise counter Sharpedo.
  • Protect ensures that Sharpedo gets a Speed boost and avoids First Impression from Golisopod and Flygon.
  • A Mild nature alongside Life Orb give Sharpedo the highest damage output without weaking (typo) the power of Close Combat.
  • Justify why you use special STAB over physical. Mention that special STABs make it easier to beat would-be checks Golisopod,Cobalion, and Gastrodon etc

  • This set fits best on more offense and hazard stacking teams as either a strong late-game cleaner or lure for certain defensive Pokemon. Mention that hazards make it easier for Sharpedo to gain KOes on physdef mons; such as Roserade or Heracross
  • Special setup sweepers such as Polteageist and Necrozma appreciate Sharpedo's ability to weaken special defensive walls such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Snorlax with Close Combat.
  • Sharpedo helps physical setup sweepers such as Barbaracle, Clyoster, and Necrozma with the fact that it can lure physical walls and weaken bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Quagsire, and Vileplume with its special moves.
  • Of course, all these setup sweepers can help Sharpedo to weaken opposing Pokemon for its own lategame sweep, meaning they have a good overall offensive synergy.
  • Froslass, Klefki, Cobalion, and Necrozma provide entry hazard support to weaken opposing Pokemon.
  • Electric- and Grass-types such as Toxtricty, Xurkitree, and Roserade deals with bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Suicune, and Gastrodon that Sharpedo struggles with.

Bewear checks physically variants very well due to its ability Fluffy, but specially based variants can knock out Bewear with Hydro Pump after a little bit of damage.
Cobalion and Heracross check physical variants well due to their natural bulk, but specially based variants can OHKO the aforementioned with some chip damage.
This is optional as i might be a bit picky with this but Bewear is unfortunately C+ in viability since its place in the meta has been replaced but Coba and Hera i feel are good mentions here

Special variants can also revenge kill Sharpedo with Vaccum Wave, however, this move is not very common at all. Move this to Priority Users with mention of Sucker Punch on physical as when boosted it can kill after some life orb chip

**Specially Defensive Pokemon**: Specially defensive Pokemon such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Snorlax check specially based variants very well, but are 2HKOed by Close Combat.

**Physically Defensive Pokemon**: Physical walls such as Galarian, (AC) Weezing, (AC) and Vileplume check physical sets very well and knock them out very easy. However, Galarian Weezing is easy to wear down due to their lack of reliable recovery. In addition, they lose very quickly against special variants.

Hey Reece,
thank you very much for your AM Check :)

mention that boosting threats like Cloyster and Flygon can outpace Sharpedo as well as common choice scarfers due to its slow speed
I'm unsure about this because it sounds like a setup sweeper can revenge kill Sharpedo after setup. On the other hand, Sharpedo is not a revenge killer that fails to revenge kill these setup sweepers - it is a late-game cleaner. So that's why I didn't implemented it. However, maybe I understand your suggestion wrong so please excuse me if I do.
I'm unsure about the Choice Scarf users too because it is (for me) a not reliable/common scenarion since +1 Sharpedo can just click protect to be faster next turn. However, I added them in the C&C section and want to leave it to QC team if I should add fast Scarfer in the overview or not.

Mention that hazards make it easier for Sharpedo to gain KOes on physdef mons; such as Roserade or Heracross
I changed the bullet point a little bit and added more infos in the Hazard setter point to better reflect the fact.

Move this to Priority Users with mention of Sucker Punch on physical as when boosted it can kill after some life orb chip
I've moved the Vacuum Wave mention to the priority users because you're right. But I'm unsure about Sucker Punch because it only does 34.5 - 40.5% to Sharpedo and it might get to specific if I add SD boost, LO recoil (and/or CC drops). So I leave this to QC too if I should add Sucker Punch Toxicroak.

Cobalion and Heracross check physical variants well due to their natural bulk, but specially based variants can OHKO the aforementioned with some chip damage.
I didn't implemented this because Sharpedo can OHKO Cobalion with CC (252+ Atk Life Orb Sharpedo Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Cobalion: 283-335 (87.6 - 103.7%) -- 25% chance to OHKO) - unless its Berry but this is not very common. Heracross is also a shaky one because Sharpedo does 73.7 - 87.3% to it with Waterfall and Heracross is easy to chip down Heracross that Sharpedo can OHKO it - unless its the HDB-Spikes-set.
I removed Bewear because C+ rank.

EDIT:
Talked with Reece and added the suggestion to add Cobalion as a CC target (physical set) and add Golisopod as a check in the C&C section due to its good bulk for physical variants.

[OVERVIEW]

Sharpedo is a devastating late-game cleaner in RU due to its fantastic mixed offensive stats and great ability in Speed Boost, which makes it nearly impossible to revenge kill after some boosts. Its powerful STAB moves on both sides and strong coverage move in Close Combat enable Sharpedo to run either a specially based mixed or physically set, which make counterplay much more difficult. However, Sharpedo has awful defensive stats and bad defensive typing, meaning it depends heavily to KO opposing Pokemon in one hit or it will be defeated in return. This also means it depends heavily on team support. Even though many would-be checks are depended on its set, both sets still struggle against bulky Water-types, various offensive threats, and are easy revenge killed by strong priority users.

move 2: Dark Pulse
move 3: Close Combat
move 4: Protect

[SET COMMENTS]

Sharpedo's special STAB moves allow it to better deal with many common threats and would-be checks such as Golisopod, Gastrodon, and Steelix. Close Combat hits specially defensive walls such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Registeel which would otherwise counter Sharpedo. Protect ensures that Sharpedo gets a Speed boost and avoids First Impression from Golisopod and Flygon. A Mild nature alongside Life Orb give Sharpedo the highest damage output without weakening the power of Close Combat.

This set fits best on more offensive and hazard stacking teams, since they provide the best offensive support for Sharpedo to clean late-game and appreciate it as a strong win condition in return. Special setup sweepers such as Polteageist and Necrozma appreciate Sharpedo's ability to weaken special defensive walls such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Snorlax with Close Combat. Sharpedo helps physical setup sweepers such as Barbaracle, Cloyster, and Necrozma with the fact that it can lure physical walls and weaken bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Quagsire, and Vileplume with its special moves. Of course, all these setup sweepers can help Sharpedo to weaken opposing Pokemon for its own late-game sweep, meaning they have a good overall offensive synergy. Froslass, Klefki, Cobalion, and Necrozma provide entry hazard support to weaken opposing Pokemon, especially bulky Water-types such as Milotic, Gastrodon, and Suicune. Knock Off users such as Golisopod, Heracross, and Toxicroak removing Heavy-Duty Boots from Milotic, Gastrodon and Flying-types such as Togekiss, Noivern, and Crobat, making it possible to weaken them with Stealth Rock that Sharpedo can pick them off. Electric- and Grass-types such as Toxtricity, Xurkitree, and Roserade deals with the aforementioned bulky Water-types that Sharpedo struggles with. [this paragraph is a bit long, so i'd remove this sentence] Cobalion, Polteageist, and Mimikyu take advantage of common priority users that revenge kill Sharpedo like Entei and Lucario.

[SET COMMENTS]

The physical Sharpedo set takes advantage of its higher Attack stat and more reliable STAB moves for an easier late-game sweep and better match-up against more specially defensive Pokemon such as Umbreon, Snorlax, and Assault Vest Reuniclus. Waterfall is used over Liquidation, because the flinch chance has more use than the slightly higher Base Power. Close Combat hits bulky foes such as Registeel, Umbreon, and Cobalion extremely hard, which otherwise take its STAB moves well. Protect allows Sharpedo to get a Speed boost and prevents from being revenge killed by First Impression from Golisopod and Flygon.

Sharpedo fits very well on more offensive and entry hazard stacking teams, since these playstyles provide the best support for Sharpedo and appreciate it as a strong late-game cleaner in return. Froslass, Klefki, Necrozma, and Cobalion setup entry hazards to wear down bulky Water-types and physically walls such as Milotic, Gastrodon, and Vileplume which Sharpedo struggles to break through. Necrozma, Golisopod, and Salazzle provide Knock Off support to remove Heavy-Duty Boots from Pokemon such as Gastrodon and Togekiss, so they get weaken by entry hazards. Choice Scarf Gardevoir cripples them with Trick while also providing Healing Wish support. Setup sweepers like Dragon Dance Flygon and Shell Smash Cloyster can also weaken these bulky Water-types and physical walls or take advantage of Sharpedo weakening them. Mimikyu, Polteageist, and Lucario are setup sweepers that can setup on common revenge killers such as Entei and Lucario. Flip Turn alongside Choice Band or Heavy-Duty Boots instead of Life Orb turn Sharpedo into an offensive pivot. However, Sharpedo is a poor pivot due to its bad defensive stats and the missing of Life Orb and a coverage move or Protect limit Sharpedo extremely; Flip Turn also does very little damage to most of its checks, so it is better to use Sharpedo's teammates to weaken them. Destiny Bond is an option to remove an opposing Pokemon safely, but Sharpedo often has no space to run this move over another and it is also not a reliable strategy. Psychic Fangs over Close Combat is an option on the physical set to better deal with Toxicroak, Vileplume, and Galarian Weezing; however, without Close Combat Sharpedo has a harder time to break through bulky Pokemon such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Registeel. Ice Beam is an option to better deal with Togekiss and Noivern, but has less use outside of these match-ups and makes Sharpedo helpless against special walls such as Porygon2, Umbreon, and Registeel.

Checks and Counters
===================

Suicune has also no reliable recovery besides Rest, which makes it less reliable. [Add Volcanion]

**Priority Users**: Strong priority users such as Lucario and Entei can easily revenge kill Sharpedo due to its bad defensive stats. Special Toxicroak variants can also revenge kill Sharpedo with Vaccum Wave, however, this move is not very common at all. Golisopod and Flygon fail this role, since Sharpedo can always block their First Impression with Protect.

**Various Offensive threats**: Toxicroak is immune to Sharpedo's Water-type moves and is not 2HKOed by its other two moves while Toxicroak OHKOes Sharpedo in return. As long as Mimikyu's Disguise is intact, it can always prevent a sweep from Sharpedo. Fast Choice Scarf users such as Flygon and Darmanitan can still revenge kill a +1 Sharpedo. However, this is a very specific scenario since Sharpedo can easily use Protect to be faster then them next turn. Even though Golisopod fails to revenge kill Sharpedo with First Impression due to Protect, it can slightly check physical variants well, since Sharpedo's Crunch does not put it into Emergency Exit range.

**Specially Defensive Pokemon**: Specially defensive Pokemon such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Snorlax check specially based variants very well, but are 2HKOed by Close Combat.

**Physically Defensive Pokemon**: Physical walls such as Galarian Weezing and Vileplume check physical sets very well and knock them out very easy. However, Galarian Weezing is easy to wear down due to its lack of reliable recovery. In addition, they lose very quickly against special variants.

Destiny Bond is an option to remove an opposing Pokemon safely, but Sharpedo often has no space to run this move over another move, and it is also not a reliable strategy. Psychic Fangs over Close Combat is an option on the physical set to better deal with Toxicroak, Vileplume, and Galarian Weezing; however, without Close Combat, (AC) Sharpedo has a harder time to break breaking through bulky Pokemon such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Registeel. Ice Beam is an option to better deal with Togekiss and Noivern, but it has less use outside of these match-ups matchups and makes Sharpedo helpless against special walls such as Porygon2, Umbreon, and Registeel.

Checks and Counters
===================

Suicune has only access to Rest while Volcanion has no reliable only has Rest for recovery and Volcanion doesn't run (I imagine?) recovery, which makes them less reliable.

**Priority Users**: Strong priority users such as Lucario and Entei can easily revenge kill Sharpedo due to its bad defensive stats. Special Toxicroak variants can also revenge kill Sharpedo with Vaccum Wave; (comma -> semicolon) however, this move is not very common at all. Golisopod and Flygon fail in this role, since Sharpedo can always block their First Impressions with Protect.

**Various Offensive Threats**: Toxicroak is a good offensive check to Sharpedo, since it is immune to Sharpedo's Water-type moves, not 2HKOed by its other two moves, and OHKOes able to OHKO Sharpedo in return. As long as Mimikyu's Disguise is intact, it can always prevent a sweep from Sharpedo. Fast Choice Scarf users such as Flygon and Darmanitan can still revenge kill a +1 Sharpedo. However, this is a very specific scenario since Sharpedo unless Sharpedo just used Protect, it can easily use Protect to be faster then than them next turn. Even though Golisopod fails to revenge kill Sharpedo with First Impression due to Protect, it can slightly check physical variants well, since Sharpedo's Crunch does not put it into Emergency Exit range.

**Specially Defensive Pokemon**: Specially defensive Pokemon such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Snorlax check specially based variants take Sharpedo's special moves (maybe nitpicking, but idk if its fair to say they check the special-based variants very well when they always run cc) very well (RC) but are 2HKOed by Close Combat.

**Physically Defensive Pokemon**: Physical walls such as Galarian Weezing and Vileplume check physical sets very well and knock them out very easy. easily. However, Galarian Weezing is easy to wear down due to its lack of reliable recovery. In addition, they lose very quickly against special variants.

[OVERVIEW]

Sharpedo is a devastating late-game cleaner in RU due to its fantastic mixed offensive stats and great ability in Speed Boost, which makes it nearly impossible to revenge kill after a few turns. Its powerful physical and special STAB moves, alongside a strong coverage move in Close Combat, enable Sharpedo to can run either a specially-based mixed or physical set, which makes counterplay much more difficult.(U already mentioned its mixed offensive capabilities in the first sentence, so this is redundant information.) However, Sharpedo has awful defensive stats and bad defensive typing, meaning it depends heavily on team support and KOing foes in one hit to avoid being defeated in return. This also means it depends heavily on team support. Even though many checks are dependent on its set, both sets still struggle against bulky Water-types, various offensive threats, and strong priority users.

[SET]
name: Specially-based Mixed Cleaner
move 1: Hydro Pump
move 2: Dark Pulse
move 3: Close Combat
move 4: Protect
item: Life Orb
ability: Speed Boost
nature: Mild
evs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Sharpedo's special STAB moves are best to deal with many common threats and would-be checks such as Golisopod, Gastrodon, and Steelix. Close Combat hits specially defensive walls such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Registeel,(RC) which would otherwise counter Sharpedo. Protect ensures that Speed Boost triggers and blocks First Impression from Golisopod and Flygon. A Mild nature alongside Life Orb gives Sharpedo the highest damage output without weakening Close Combat.(max/max spread)

Sharpedo fits best on more offensive and entry hazard-stacking teams, since they provide the best offensive support for Sharpedo to clean late-game and appreciate it as a strong wincon in return enable it to clean late-game and function as a strong wincon. Special setup sweepers such as Polteageist and Necrozma appreciate Sharpedo's ability to weaken specially defensive walls such as Umbreon, Porygon2, and Snorlax with Close Combat. Sharpedo helps physical setup sweepers such as Barbaracle, Cloyster, and Necrozma because it can lure in physical walls and weaken bulky foes such as Milotic, Quagsire, and Vileplume with its special moves. Of course,(RC) all These(capitalize) setup sweepers also have good offensive synergy with Sharpedo and can help Sharpedo to weaken it by weakening opposing Pokemon for its own late-game sweep,(RC) meaning they have good offensive synergy. Knock Off users such as Golisopod, Heracross, and Toxicroak removes Heavy-Duty Boots from Milotic, Gastrodon, and Flying-types such as Togekiss, Noivern, and Crobat, making it possible to weaken them with Stealth Rock so that Sharpedo can pick them off. Cobalion, Polteageist, and Mimikyu take advantage of common priority users that revenge kill Sharpedo like Entei and Lucario.

[SET]
name: Physical Cleaner
move 1: Waterfall
move 2: Crunch
move 3: Close Combat
move 4: Protect
item: Life Orb
ability: Speed Boost
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

The Physical(capitalize) Sharpedo set takes advantage of its higher Attack stat and more reliable STAB moves for an easier late-game sweep and better matchup against more specially defensive Pokemon such as Umbreon, Snorlax, and Assault Vest Reuniclus. Waterfall is used over Liquidation because the flinch chance has more use than the slightly higher Base Power and possible Defense drop. Close Combat hits bulky foes such as Registeel, Umbreon, and Cobalion,(RC) which otherwise take its STAB moves well,(RC) extremely hard. Protect allows Sharpedo to trigger Speed boost and prevents it from being revenge killed by First Impression from Golisopod and Flygon.

Sharpedo fits very well on more offensive and entry hazard-stacking teams, since they provide great support and can weaken its checks and appreciate its late-game cleaning. Necrozma, Golisopod, and Salazzle provide Knock Off support to remove Heavy-Duty Boots from checks such as Gastrodon and Togekiss. Choice Scarf Gardevoir cripples bulky obstacles like Milotic, Gastrodon, and Vaporeon with Trick while also providing Healing Wish support. Setup sweepers like Dragon Dance Flygon and Shell Smash Cloyster can also weaken these bulky Water-types and physical walls or take advantage of Sharpedo weakening them. Mimikyu, Polteageist, and Lucario are other good examples setup sweepers.
