Week 2: Twix's Balanced Deoxys-Defense Psychic

Keeping with the theme of high usage types, Psychic was Number 1 in usage this month! Twix was nice enough to pass me this specific team, which showcases a lot of Psychic's standard threats like Mew, Meloetta, and Hoopa-U, while giving an underrated star in Deoxys-Defense a chance!

Submissions will be open until Tuesday afternoon/evening!

Types Eligible (note: neutral matchups are allowed due to lacking pool of disadvantaged types):

Deoxys-Defense @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature

Volcarona @ Lum Berry
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 248 HP / 208 Def / 52 Spe
Bold Nature
- Roost
- Bug Buzz
- Fire Blast
- Quiver Dance

This bulky set allows Volcarona to survive hits from the faster mons, while still outspeeding the slower, bulkier mons, such as Deoxys-Defense and Metagross

Volcarona can successfully set up on Meloetta, and then roost off all damage taken
252 SpA Choice Specs Meloetta Psychic vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 210-247 (56.3 - 66.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Meloetta Psychic vs. +1 248 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 139-165 (37.2 - 44.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Hoopa can only 2HKO, so as long as volc gets off one Quiver before it switches in, it can live, Quiver again, and outspeed and kill the subsequent turn.
252 Atk Hoopa Unbound Hyperspace Fury vs. 248 HP / 208+ Def Volcarona: 189-223 (50.6 - 59.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Lum Berry helps avoid getting residual right away from Deoxys, essentially providing one free Quiver Dance

Once Volcarona gets to Plus 2, it sweeps the whole team:
+2 0 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Meloetta: 404-476 (118.4 - 139.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 0 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Hoopa Unbound: 804-948 (267.1 - 314.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 0 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 96 SpD Assault Vest Metagross: 404-476 (110.9 - 130.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 0 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Mega Latias: 354-416 (97.5 - 114.6%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO
+2 0 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mew: 500-590 (146.6 - 173%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 0 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Deoxys-D: 332-392 (109.5 - 129.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Darmanitan @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Filler
- Filler
- U-turn
- Flare Blitz

The man point of Darmanitan is to lure in the bulkier members, such as Mega Latias and Deoxys-Defense, and then U-Turn out into Volcarona to set up and sweep. However, if need be, Darmanitan can do some heavy hitting itself:

252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Darmanitan Flare Blitz vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Deoxys-D: 179-212 (59 - 69.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Life Orb Darmanitan U-turn vs. 248 HP / 68 Def Mega Latias: 172-203 (47.3 - 55.9%) -- 76.2% chance to 2HKO

Naturally, crits produce a problem, but generally the core is pretty untouchable. In the scenario that Deoxys gets off a taunt vs Volcarona before a Quiver Dance is set up, +1 Bug Buzz 2HKO, and the following toxic is disregarded due to Lum. Volcarona can live a Hyperspace from Hoopa if that is selected, or can eat up attacks from Meloetta and Metagross, enough so to outlast the taunt and roost up.

The main issue that really comes into play is Stealth Rocks, which halve Volcarona's health and take a fourth from Darmanitan, which is especially annoying when combined with Life Orb and switching with U-Turn. However, this core is more geared towards offense, and isn't the whole team. Because of this, the core can be coupled with Rapid Spin Torkoal or Defog Charizard Y, both of which can help remove hazards as well as provide damage to weaken the opposing team, ultimately leading to a Volcarona sweep.

Fighting Core:

Heracross @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Megahorn
- Knock Off
- Stone Edge

Gallade @ Galladite
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Psycho Cut
- Knock Off

Cobalion @ Leftovers
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Volt Switch
- Iron Head
- Thunder Wave
- Stealth Rock

The set plays pretty naturally. Heracross gets a kill every time it comes in against anything not named Metagross as it at worst 2HKOs everything. Depending on the rest of your team, you can even run Moxie, but the Metagross revenge kill is too threatening to stay in against. Gallade, if it ever finds a time to setup (Say against Deoxys-D, Latias, or Mew?)after Hoopa-U's death can easily sweep with a +2 Knock Off. also, Heracross can kill Metagross after an unboosted Knock Off from Gallade. If this happens, Heracross can sweep everything with Megahorn even without Moxie boosts.Cobalion is a nice pivot that can take a hit and Volt Switch around to give switches to the main hitters of the core. It also provides nice Stealth Rock support, and can the bonus of yellow magic is never to be underestimated.

Water Core
+

Sharpedo @ Sharpedonite
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Protect
- Crunch
- Waterfall
- Ice Fang / Filler

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Lax Nature
- Recover
- Earthquake
- Toxic
- Infestation

Basically, it is: sweep everything with Sharpedo +1 Speed and then switch into or Quagsire to counter the random thunderbolts on the team. Sharpedo does a major chunk to this team.

ALSO, the reason I use Mega Sharpedo > Mega Gyarados is because: The random thunderbolts and the focus blast on Hoopa - U. It also can gain free speed with speed boost before mega evolving, and there are no downsides to doing protect barring Mew.

Mew is the main threat of this. That Nasty Plot + Vacuum Wave is really weird so Quag is the ultimate Counter to Mew, Unaware walls it and thunderbolt doesn't work. Infestation on Quagsire is so Mew cannot switch so that annoying shit doesn't cause any more trouble for Mega Sharpedo.

The only sad thing is that you have to get rid of your speed boosts to move away from mew, but here are some calcs and they may prove this explanation wrong.

Ze Calcs of Sharpedo-God

Hoopa-U

252+ Atk Strong Jaw Mega Sharpedo Crunch vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 382-451 (126.9 - 149.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Deoxys - Defense (can't do anything back to Sharpedo)

252+ Atk Strong Jaw Mega Sharpedo Crunch vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Deoxys-D: 236-278 (77.8 - 91.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
Mew

252+ Atk Strong Jaw Mega Sharpedo Crunch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew: 456-536 (133.7 - 157.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

mew does back.

252 SpA Expert Belt Mew Vacuum Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mega Sharpedo: 125-149 (44.4 - 53%) -- 26.2% chance to 2HKO

+2 252 SpA Expert Belt Mew Vacuum Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mega Sharpedo: 247-293 (87.9 - 104.2%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO

make sure mew doesnt set up.
Metagross

252+ Atk Strong Jaw Mega Sharpedo Crunch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Metagross: 362-428 (99.4 - 117.5%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO

pretty good odds.

160+ Atk Metagross Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Sharpedo: 155-183 (55.1 - 65.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Meloetta

252+ Atk Strong Jaw Mega Sharpedo Crunch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Meloetta: 564-666 (165.3 - 195.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Mega Latias

252+ Atk Strong Jaw Mega Sharpedo Crunch vs. 248 HP / 68 Def Mega Latias: 368-434 (101.3 - 119.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

tl;dr Mega Sharpedo is a god

- Taunt
Skarmory @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Defog
- Roost
- Whirlwind
- Iron Head

Mega Gyarados is a great setup sweeper, and it can set up easily on every member of the team bar Hoopa-U.It also has taunt to put a stop on Deo-d and Mew.And will outspeed Hoopa-U if it can get two boosts and it will always kills it with stab. But since the competition asks for a core, skarmory was added. Its main use is to remove rocks since its a must on any flying team.So yeah,a pretty solid core.

These guys don't have a very hard time breaking psychic at all. Hippowdon is there to set SR, and set sandstorm for Excadrill. As for Excadrill....ones with X-Scissor especially, this can easily sweep, and on Twix's team there isn't anything to wall its combination of moves. Landorus-T may seem strange, but for when sand is not available, he can come to the rescue and spam Knock Off and/or U-Turn.

Scolipede just runs through the team even without a Swords Dance if Metagross is weakened enough. Drapion is mostly there to Taunt the Deo D to prevent hazard stack. Beedrill also pretty much runs through the team if it's mega, being able to outspeed Hoopa U and is also able to clean up if you miss a Megahorn.

As with almost all Flying teams, this one is extremely weak to the underrated Weavile. In fact, it actually can OHKO every member on the team with Icicle Crash and Low Kick, besides Skarmory, which takes basically -0. This was were I added Special Scarf Hoopa-U; an underrated set to take on Skarmory, as well as a secondary check to Adamant Gyarados even at +1. Its coverage in Thunderbolt was also pretty cool, to help take on Tornadus and Togekiss if they were weakened.

252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Icicle Crash vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Zapdos: 393-463 (102.6 - 120.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Hoopa-Unbound @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Magician
EVs: 180 Atk / 76 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Hyperspace Fury
- Hyperspace Hole
- Thunderbolt
- Grass Knot

This is a mixed scarfed Hoopa-U, he outspeed M-Gyarados at +1 (Adamant only) and can OKHO him with Grass Knot if the SR is set. Hyperspace Fury is here to hit hard Zapdos and Tornadus-T, Thunderbolt is here for lure Skamory.

Victini @ Choice Band
Ability: Victory Star
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

Choice Band Victini hit very hard, his powerful stab OKHO everything when Stealth Rocks is set (except Gyarados), just spam V-Create :3

Latios @ Choice Scarf

Nothing to say, classical scarf. Ice Beam hit Gliscor, Psyshock for Tornadus and Togekiss.

This core absolutely needs SR to work well, and also need a Physical Wall like Slowbro. Hope you like it :)
