Pros:
  • A blazing 130 base speed outruns the majority of viable mons in the tier, notably Tornadus-Therian and the Eon Twins, as well as speed typing Tapu Koko. This allows Aerodactyl to outrun and threaten these with super effective attacks.
  • Access to good utility moves, such as Taunt and Stealth Rock, alongside Roost, Tailwind, and Defog, allow it to, in theory, fill a lot of roles.
  • Aerodactyl has pretty good coverage options, such as Earthquake, Aqua Tail, and Crunch, which allow it to threaten a plethora of OU-viable pokemon.
  • Access to Taunt and Stealth Rock in particular make Aerodactyl very effecient at keeping Stealth Rock on the field. Considering a decent amount of viable defoggers in the OU tier share a flying typing, Aerodactyl can effectively threaten a lot of these with Stone Edge.
Cons:
  • While base 105 attack isn't terrible, persay, Aerodactyl isn't quite strong enough to break common OU staples, such as Tangrowth, Landorus-Therian, or Corviknight.
  • Aerodactyl's bulk is barely passible enough to check threats such as Tornadus-Therian, but is easily overwhelmed by moderately strong, neutral attacks. This also prevents it from coming in a lot of the time, as one wrong call will generally cause Aerodactyl to be KO'd.
  • 130 Base speed is good, but Aerodactyl still finds itself being outrun a lot of the time by Dragapult, Pheramosa, and common Choice Scarfers such as Landorus-Therian and Latias.
  • While it does have a versatile amount of coverage options, the fact that it (like every other pokemon) is unable to run all of these at the same time means Aerodactyl will always be walled by something, no matter what.

Potential Sets

Suicide Lead

Aerodactyl @ Focus Sash
Ability: Unnerve
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Taunt
- Stone Edge / Rock Tomb
- Earthquake

A good speed tier, coupled with Stealth Rock and Taunt, make Aerodactyl an effective lead on Hyper-Offensive builds. Taunt keeps Defoggers from coming in and removing it's rocks. Stone Edge coupled with Earthquake is a notorious combination, hitting a lot of the metagame for at least neutral damage. Rock Tomb can be an option over Stone Edge to drop the opponent's speed, possibly forcing a KO or at least a switch.

Utility

Aerodactyl @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock / Defog
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake / Taunt
- Roost

Rock + Flying is a decent defensive typing, allowing Aerodactyl to capitalize on it's typing to check threats such as Tornadus-Therian, Moltres, and so on. Stealth Rock and Defog are both options of hazard control, either setting them up or removing. Roost is essential to keep Aerodactyl healthy throughout a match. Taunt is another option to have a better matchup vs Defoggers, but Taunt should probably only be considered on Stealth Rock variants.

Dragon Dance

Aerodactyl @ Life Orb / Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Unnerve
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake / Fire Fang
- Aqua Tail / Ice Fang / Dual Wingbeat

With Screens and Hazard Support, Dragon Dance can potentially make Aerodactyl to pull off a setup sweeper set. Aqua Tail and Ice Fang allow Aerodactyl to hit Ground types such as Landorus-Therian and Hippowdon for Super-Effective Damage. Other options include Dual Wingbeat to hit Grass types harder, or Fire Fang to hit the likes of Ferrothorn, Genesect, and Kartana.

I think Life Orb should be the primary item on the DD set because Aerodactly is pretty frail as it is and really appreciates the power boost as base 105 attack is underwhelming without a boost.
