Gen 3 Magnemite Minor [QC: 1/2]

:rs/magnemite:

[OVERVIEW]
Magnemite is a slow but powerful Electric-type that serves as a strong wallbreaker in ADV LC. Magnemite has access to Thunder Wave and Substitute, and can use a combination of that and strong special attacks to break down even the strongest of special walls. Magnemite is a strong lead slot, as it beats common leads such as specially defensive Wailmer and Doduo, and is one of the most consistent answers to Doduo's STAB combination of Double-Edge and Drill Peck. Magnemite's poor speed can lead to it getting overwhelmed due to the general fast pace of ADV LC, leaving it vulnerable to faster threats such as Diglett or specially offensive Wailmer, commonly requiring having a Substitute up to deal with these foes, while being favored to beat dig. Magnemite does decently versus offensive team structures due to its powerful defensive typing, power, and access to Thunder Wave. Magnemite's biggest threats are the trappers Diglett and Trapinch, who can both trap and OHKO Magnemite, with Trapinch having a near unloseable 1v1, where the Magnemite user has to crit HP Grass to win.

[SET]
Offensive Utility (Magnemite) @ Sitrus Berry
Level: 5
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 240 SpA / 236 Spe
IVs: 2 Atk / 30 SpA
Modest Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Grass
- Thunder Wave / Metal Sound
- Substitute

[SET COMMENTS]
Hidden Power Grass is used to hit Diglett and can be used to leave targets slightly above Sitrus Berry activation range to be removed by Thunderbolt, such as Koffing, Snubbull, and Porygon after one layer of Spikes. Thunder Wave slows down targets so Magnemite can outspeed them, while Metal Sound can be used to OHKO would-be checks such as Trapinch while behind a Substitute, as Magnemite can OHKO without activating Sitrus Berry. Substitute has synergy with Metal Sound, but also with Thunder Wave, allowing Magnemite to fish for a full paralysis. Substitute also allows Magnemite to have a good chance of beating Specially Defensive Diglett, one of the most common counters. Magnemite can setup Substitute on pokemon like Wailmer and Doduo, allowing it to 2HKO with HP Grass into Thunderbolt or spread paralysis for its allies. While Sturdy is a useless ability, it is still used here to avoid being countertrapped by Trace Porygon or Ralts.

Magnemite is one of the most consistent Porygon and Wailmer answers, while also being a fallback Doduo counter. This role compression works well with Dragon Dance users Larvitar and Bagon, who can worry less about being walled and revenge killed. Magnemite is also one of the best trap lures in the meta, as very little else reliably counters it. Thus, Magnemite pairs well with Porygon to countertrap and remove the trappers, as well as other trapping weak mons such as Ponyta and Chinchou, who can run wild after the trapper is removed. It can also double switch into Porygon on a predicted trapper switch-in, counter trapping the trapper and allowing Magnemite to not worry about being trapped. Magnemite is a great lead, beating the common lead Wailmer and being able to paralyze the Spikes leads, and generally annoying many of the common leads.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Magnemite can use Toxic to reliably chip walls such as Porygon or Lileep, which is niche due to the fast pace of the metagame, but the extra chip can enable KOs its partners usually wouldn't have gotten. It can also use Magnet Pull to trap opposing Magnemite to revenge kill or trade with it. Magnemite is also a potential user of Endure + Salac Berry, allowing it to turn the tables on an unsuspecting Diglett, however, Magnemite loses the longevity of Sitrus Berry, which is essential for a Thunder Wave + Substitute spam strategy.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Trappers**: Diglett can outspeed and OHKO Magnemite, while Trapinch lives a hit and also OHKOes. These two prevent Magnemite from switching with Arena Trap, and are the most reliable Magnemite counters.

**Fast Offensive Wailmer**: Magnemite, being one of the only able to OHKO the common Specially Defensive Wailmer, can be caught off guard by specially offensive Wailmer, which can outspeed and OHKO Magnemite with Water Spout.

**Houndour**: Houndour, while not a reliable switch in as it can get paralyzed and switched out on, can OHKO Magnemite with Fire Blast, and thus is a good replacement mon for when an ally faints revenge killer against Magnemite.

**Ground Move Users**: Pokemon that commonly use ground type moves such as Bonemerang Cubone and Earthquake Snubbull can beat Magnemite one-on-one, being able to tank one hit and OHKO back.

Magnemite has access to Thunder Wave and Substitute, and can use a combination of that and strong special attacks to break down even the strongest of special walls. Magnemite is commonly used on teams that stack trapping-weak mons, used to bait out Diglett or Trapinch for Porygon to counter trap. This information is better suited to the second paragraph in the set comments Magnemite is a strong lead slot, as it beats common leads such as Specially Defensive Wailmer and Doduo, and is one of the most consistent answers to Doduo's STAB combination of Double-Edge and Drill Peck. Magnemite's poor speed leaves it vulnerable to faster threats such as Diglett or specially Ooffensive Wailmer, and commonly relies on having a Substitute up to have a chance of dealing with these foes.

Mention its ability to do decently versus offense thanks to its typing, power, and Thunder Wave. Wallbreaking isn't that useful in a tier as powerful as this. Mention that its low Speed can lead to it getting overwhelmed due to the pace of ADV LC. And emphasize how bad its matchup against the trappers are.

[SET COMMENTS]
Magnemite chooses maximum Speed and Special Attack to do maximum damage to bulky mons such as Porygon, Snubbul, and to semi-reliably OHKO Specially Defensive Diglett behind a Substitute. The EV spread is self-explanatory, and easy to assume besides the point about Diglett, which can be mentioned elsewhere Thunderbolt is reliable and strong stab, while Self-explanatory Hidden Power Grass hits the aforementioned Diglett and can be used to leave targets slightly above Sitrus Berry proc range, Give examles to be removed by Thunderbolt. Thunder Wave slows down targets so Magnemite can outspeed them, while Metal Sound can be used to OHKO would-be checks such as Trapinch while behind a Sub. Explain why this works, i.e. because it lets Magnemite avoid having to deal with their Sitrus Berry Substitute has the synergy with Metal Sound, but also with Thunder Wave, allowing the Magnemite user to fish for a full paralysis. Substitute also allows Magnemite to have a good chance of beating Specially Defensive Diglett, one of the most common counters. Talk about places where it can set up, and give other examples of Pokemon that Substitute helps against While Sturdy is a useless ability the vast majority of the time, I think the only time it could be useful is if Metrenome chooses an OHKO move, which is so specific and terrible we can just say it's useless it is still used here to avoid being countertrapped by Trace Porygon or Ralts, which can sometimes be undesireable. Being trapped is really something you never want to be, so this is self-explaatory

Magnemite is one of the best trap lures in the meta, as very little else reliably counters it. Thus, Magnemite pairs well with Porygon to countertrap and remove the trappers, as well as other trapping weak mons such as Ponyta and Chinchou, who can run wild after the trapper is removed. This paragraph is way too short. Talk about which walls Magnemite can eliminate, and teammates that benefit from them being removed. Talk about its ability to double switch to counter trap the trappers. Also talk about its ability to check Doduo, and teammates that like that. Also talk about its nature as a lead, and which mus it does good and bad against, and teammates that can help against the bad mus.

Magnemite can use Toxic to reliably chip walls such as Porygon or Lileep if the extra chip is desireable. Talk about how the pace of the meta makes this niche It can also use Magnet Pull to trap opposing Magnemite to force a 1v1 to revenge kill or trade with it. Magnemite is also a potential user of Endure + Salac Berry, allowing it to turn the tables on an unsuspecting Diglett, however, Magnemite loses the longevity of Sitrus Berry, which is essential for a Thunder Wave + Substitute spam strategy.

Magnemite is a slow but powerful Electric-type that serves as a strong wallbreaker in ADV LC. Magnemite has access to Thunder Wave and Substitute, and can use a combination of that and strong special attacks to break down even the strongest of special walls. Magnemite is a strong lead slot, (remove bold) as it beats common leads such as Sspecially Ddefensive Wailmer and Doduo, and is one of the most consistent answers to Doduo's STAB combination of Double-Edge and Drill Peck. Magnemite's poor speed can lead to it getting overwhelmed due to the general fast pace of ADV LC, leaving it vulnerable to faster threats such as Diglett or specially offensive Wailmer, and commonly relies on having a Substitute up to have a chance of dealing with these foes. (iirc mag has a very good matchup into diglett if its behind sub? this makes it sound like dig is more likely to win that mu) Magnemite does decently versus offensive team structures due to its powerful defensive typing, power, and access to Thunder Wave. Magnemite's biggest threats are the trappers Diglett and Trapinch, who can both trap and OHKO Magnemite. (i would highlight how deadly trapinch is here since it totally owns mag where diglett has a ~70% chance to lose to mag if mag's behind a sub)

Hidden Power Grass is used to hit Diglett and can be used to leave targets slightly above Sitrus Berry proc range to be removed by Thunderbolt, such as Koffing, Snubbull, and Porygon after one layer of Spikes. Thunder Wave slows down targets so Magnemite can outspeed them, while Metal Sound can be used to OHKO would-be checks such as Trapinch while behind a Substitute, as Magnemite can OHKO without proccing Sitrus Berry. ("proc" in these sentences could be replaced with activation/activating) (would mention these moves are also good for supporting teammates) Substitute has synergy with Metal Sound, but also with Thunder Wave, allowing the Magnemite user to fish for a full paralysis. (condense these two sentences into one) While Sturdy is a useless ability, it is still used here to preferred over Magnet Pull to avoid being countertrapped by Trace Porygon or Ralts.

Magnemite is one of the most consistent Porygon and Wailmer answers, while also being a fallback Doduo counter. (a fallback doduo counter? i think it can just be mentioned alongside porygon and wailmer) This role compression works well with Dragon Dance users Larvitar and Bagon, who can worry less about being walled and revenge killed. (state more clearly that larvitar and bagon cant break through these targets) Magnemite is also one of the best trap Diglett and Trapinch lures in the meta, as very little else reliably counters it. Thus, Magnemite pairs well with Porygon to countertrap and remove the trappers, as well as other trapping weak mons Pokemon who are trapped and removed by Diglett and Trapinch such as Ponyta and Chinchou, (elekid and maybe abra are worth mentioning too imo) who can run wild after the trapper is they are removed. It can also double switch into Porygon on a predicted trapper Diglett or Trapinch switch-in, counter trapping the trapper them and allowing Magnemite to not worry about being trapped. Magnemite is a great lead, beating the common lead Wailmer and being able to paralyze the Spikes leads, and generally annoying many of the common leads. (why is it annoying? can you also move this last sentence to the beginning of the paragraph) (replaced mentions of trapper with diglett or trapinch to cut down on the number of times "trap" appeared in this paragraph)

(does mag care if pory traces magnet pull and traps it?) Magnemite is also a potential user of Endure + Salac Berry, allowing it to turn the tables on an unsuspecting Diglett, (just diglett? nothing else? also i feel like most mons can pull off endure + salac so i'd really only mention this if it gets multiple good mus) however, Magnemite loses the longevity of Sitrus Berry , which is essential for a Thunder Wave + Substitute spam strategy. (would rephrase this to instead mention using Salac Berry means Magnemite loses out on its only reliable recovery)

Checks and Counters
===================
**Trappers**: Diglett can outspeed and OHKO Magnemite, while Trapinch lives a hit and also OHKOes. These two prevent Magnemite from switching with Arena Trap, and are the most reliable Magnemite counters. (again the diglett matchup is not in diglett's favor if magnemite is behind a sub)

**Fast Offensive Wailmer**: Magnemite, being one of the only Pokemon in the tier able to OHKO the more common Sspecially Ddefensive Wailmer, can be caught off guard by specially offensive Wailmer, which can outspeed and OHKO Magnemite with Water Spout.

**Houndour**: Houndour, while not a reliable switch in as it can get paralyzed and switched out on, can OHKO Magnemite with Fire Blast, and thus is a good replacement mon for when an ally faints revenge killer against Magnemite. (are there any other pokemon that can easily revenge kill mag that are worth mentioning here?)

**Ground-type Coverage Move Users**: Pokemon that commonly use ground type moves such as Bonemerang Cubone and Earthquake Snubbull can beat Magnemite one-on-one, being able to tank one hit and OHKO back. (would just rephrase this to point out magnemite's quad weakness to ground and list pokemon that commonly carry ground-type coverage. also i think doduo is worth including since it can hit the sneaky hp ground and ohko. larv ties with mag but they both OHKO eachother so idk if its worth mentioning)
